What politicians really want

In the 1950s, it was S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike who ordered the use of water jets to disperse the peaceful Tamil satyagrahis who sat by the side of the former parliament demanding that Tamil language also be given a just place in state administrative affairs.

That was just after he introduced the Sinhala Only Act which was mainly to please the Sinhala majority whose votes were necessary for him to become prime minister.

Since then, state assets worth billions and billions of rupees have gone up in flames while the cost of living has skyrocketed to unimaginable heights to pay for the follies of the so called patriots who misled the people election after election.

Of course many of these patriots who were in rags are now in Colombo 7 while many others according to media reports own assets abroad.

The greed of politicians for power and perks today is much greater.

It is time the definition of democracy which is “Of the people, for the people and by the people” — is rewritten to suit the actions of the president, his kith and kin, and the treacherous ministers who detest the people, because what they really want is Pajeros and perks at public expense.
