Jaffna in agony: Lend a hand
Urgently needed Paracetamol – “What nonsense”. Yes! that would be your immediate reaction. But that is the present tragic situation in Jaffna. It is not only Paracetamol but multi-vitamins and other essential drugs needed by patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma are also in short supply. Reports say most people in Jaffna are already mal-nourished. Even the Doctors in Jaffna have been eating rice and dhal for months. With Chickungunya spreading all over the country, the situation in Jaffna is reported to be potentially disastrous if action is not taken immediately.
The Negombo People’s Collective for a Political Solution and the People’s Movement for the Rights of Patients are making arrangements to collect and send these urgently needed essential drugs. They can be sent as air cargo to various organizations working at grassroots levels.
In other parts of the country the State Pharmaceutical Corporation sells a card of 10 Parecetamol tablets at Rs. 5. Bur in Jaffna a single tablet of Panadol reportedly costs Rs. 3.50 and that too is in short supply with sick people having to queue up for it.
The organizations are appealing for donations cash or kind.
