Sri Lanka Civil Society action on LLRC Recommendations

The “Platform for Freedom” – a coalition of Civil Society organizations held an event on the 16th of May to pass a resolution to develop an action plan on the report released by the LLRC-the full implementation of which is believed to be crucial for reconciliation in the country.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Alternatives said:

The very substance, the very basic element of a democracy is, at the end of the day, our ability and our willingness, as citizens to be able to make informed choices

In order to do that, we need to have, the information at our disposal. And I say to you that those who came out and demonstrated against the implementation of the LLRC and against what was happening in Geneva, did not have the information to make an informed choice.”

The need for finding of the LLRC report to be accessible to the masses and the implementation of the recommendations was reiterated throughout the event.
