“There is no hesitation on our side to reiterate our position that we have always wanted a ceasefire. It is the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) that unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire”, Mr. Nadesan, political Head of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) told TamilNet today, Nov 8th. He pointed out that “LTTE was only fighting a defensive war since Colombo has thrust upon Tamils an aggressive war”.
Mr. Nadesan made the comments following recent reports of Tamil Nadu leaders seeking clarification on LTTE’s stand on ceasefire.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi issued a statement yesterday Nov 7th and called for cessation of hostilities from both the warring sides in Sri Lanka.
“A permanent ceasefire is needed to ensure lasting peace for which a cessation of hostilities from both the sides is an inevitable need. Once the fighting ends, India and other third party mediators can ensure that the Tamil minority in the island is accorded adequate rights to exist honourably,” Karunanidhi said in the statement.
State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Mr. D. Pandian earlier issued a public statement urging those who were fighting for the democratic rights of the Ealam Tamils, especially the political leadership of the LTTE, to come forward and announce their stand in a clarifying manner.
