Nutrients awareness exhibition held in Kilinochchi

An exhibition aimed at eradicating malnutrition by creating awareness among people, was held in Kilinochchi on July 12.

The exhibition was held by the Medical Officer of Health in Kilinochchi. Director of Kilinochchi Regional Health Services T. Sathyamoorthy lighted lamp to declare open the exhibition.

The exhibits showed maximizing the availability of essential nutrients by way of consuming various whole foods that are locally produced and widely available.

The exhibition goers said that the displays offered helpful hints in obtaining foods packed with essential nutrients, while living amidst Sri Lanka government enforced food restrictions on the region.

A World Health Organization (WHO) report published in June 2008 said that 26-30 percent of under fives in areas affected by the long-running war suffer from malnutrition. The report also said that this is a much higher percentage than rest of Sri Lanka.

The increase has also been partially triggered by rapidly rising food prices, a WHO Health Action in Crises report for 2-8 June 2008 stated. [pics:]
